December is all about the presents and the presence. Presents as in materialistic and meaningful gifts to let others know that they are present in their lives. Presence as in reminders to the person that you are always there for them, giving them a gift to remember you by. As the holidays are starting to pick up speed, I was thinking of what I truly wanted/needed for Christmas. There are always the things that you want (more clothes/money/shoes/accessories/make-up/books/gift cards), but I don't necessarily need any of it. I am perfectly content with what I have at this moment. I am quite fortunate to be in this state, and I realize many throughout the world are not in my position. So I've decided to come up with a list of my favorite things to do during Christmas. Nothing materialistic, nothing self-oriented. Just simply what I like to do during Christmas for others.
1. Giving Gifts- We all love receiving gifts from time to time, especially during the holidays. I most definitely love receiving gifts. But there is something about giving a gift that just lightens my soul. The unwrapping of the gift, the reaction, the warmth of the gratitude the person has. It is truly one of the greatest Christmas gifts of all. Making someone else smile and feel all warm and fuzzy inside gives me so much more satisfaction than a gift I receive.
2. Donations- I cannot stress enough how important this is to me during the holidays. Being able to give back to my community gives me the biggest smile on my face as well as the greatest satisfaction. From donating presents to local schools, churches, and workplaces to donating money to employees at the office, the fact that you know you are making a difference. I even saw a Salvation Army Santa by the local Walgreen's today. Opportunities are everywhere, it is up to you to take it.
3. Being Positive- It's always great to be a positive person year round. However, during the holidays, I try my very hardest to be a bright light for those having a bad day. A simple smile and "hey, how are you?" can make a difference in someone's day. Seems silly, but the acknowledgement they receive may be the best thing about their day. Holidays can be tough for people, so being positive and caring will truly show the Christmas spirit.
I hope you find some good ideas to do during this wonderful season. I guarantee that it will make your holidays even brighter.
xoxo
